No Diet PillsExciting recent research has come to light that Green tea could really help to improve a person’s memory.

Laboratory tests carried out by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne revealed that Green and Black tea help to hinder the activity of definite enzymes in the brain, which are associated with memory loss.

These remarkable findings which have been published in the academic journal, Phytotherapy Research may soon lead to the development of a radical treatment for one of the most common forms of dementia that affects an estimated ten million people around the world; Alzheimer’s Disease.

Coffee, Green and Black tea was meticulously investigated in a series of scientific experiments. Black tea (otherwise known as traditional English breakfast tea) is derived from the similar plant as Green tea, Camellia Sinensis, but as it is fermented is different in its colour and taste.

They found that both Green and Black tea hindered the activity of enzymes associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease, but coffee had barely any effect. Both teas quite the activity of the enzyme Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) which breaks down the chemical neurotransmitter, ‘Acetylcholine.’ Alzheimer’s is characterised by a significant drop in acetylcholine.

Green tea and Black tea also obstruct the activity of the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), which has been discovered in protein deposits, which are found in the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s.

Green tea went that one step further in that it hindered the activity of beta-secretase, which plays a part in the production of protein deposits in the brain, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists also found that its inhibitive effects continued on for a week; Black tea, on the other hand, merely reserved enzymes for just one day.

There is of yet, no cure for Alzheimer’s, but it certainly is likely to slow the development of the disease. Drugs presently on the market obstruct the activity of AChE, and others are being developed which scientists hope will restrain the activity of BuChE and Beta-Secretase.

The researchers at Newcastle University are now aggressively seeking funding to allow them to carry out further tests on Green tea, which they hope will lead onto clinical trials. Though, it may be a while before anything can be marketed, this is a very significant and promising discovery. Tea could potentially be a penetrate treatment in slowing the development of this devastating disease and giving thousands of sufferers hope.

Although there is no cure of this disease, clearly the succession of the disease can be slowed down. It is early days, and more research needs to be done but research thus far is leading to the great discovery, and additional tests are going to be carried out and more trials conducted.

These things do take time so we might have to wait for a little more to know the outcome of those trials. It is certainly something to look forward.

It really would be a great thing if green tea could assist prevent or better yet, be able to treat such a terrible disease. It would give lots of suffers hope in getting better and have a chance at improving their lives.
